CPJ College & GGSIPU Organize a Women Awareness Program Sponsored by National Commission for Women on Empowering Indian Women in NRI Matrimonial Issues
CPJ College of Higher Studies & School of Law & GGSIP University jointly organized an Awareness Program on the topic “Rights of Indian Women in NRI Matrimonial Issues” on 4th April, 2025 at the CPJ Campus. The event, Sponsored by National Commission for Women, was graced by the esteemed presence and valuable thoughts of a galaxy of dignitaries, including legal experts, social activists and academicians to discuss the complexities and challenges surrounding marriages involving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) with special focus on Rights of Indian Women.
The program began with the lighting of the auspicious lamp by the honorable guests Shri R.S. Goswami, Ex-Chairman, Bar Council Delhi, Mr. Rakesh Kumar, ACP- Delhi Police, Mr. Rakesh Ahuja, ACP- Delhi Police, Mr. Rohtash Singh Saroha, Incharge Intelligence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Acharya Ved Prakash, Master of Sprituality & Astrology, Ms. Saraswati Solanki, DLSA Panel Advocate, Ms. Firdos Khan, Women and Child Rights Activist, Prof. Shivani Goswami & Dr. Rakesh Handa from GGSIPU along with CPJ College Functionaries Dr. Yugank Chaturvedi, Director General, Dr. Jyotsna Sinha, Director, Dr. Amit Jain, Director-CA, Dr. Shalini Tyagi, Principal- SoL, Dr. Neha Mittal, Dean and other Dignitaries. Dr. Yugank Chaturvedi gave the welcome address and warmly welcomed the Hon’ble Guests, Dignitaries and all the participants. His address was both enlightening and thought-provoking, offering practical advice and cautionary measures for those navigating the complexities of NRI marriages.
The honorable guests, speaking about issues of NRI Marriages, shed light on the ways and means to empower victims, raise awareness about their rights, and promote better support systems for women and children affected by NRI marriage disputes. They also suggested solutions to address the challenges faced by women in these marriages, including legal, social and emotional difficulties. Acharya Ved Prakash emphasized the importance of Love for a successful marriage. He said, love fosters emotional support, intimacy and companionship, which are critical when partners face the challenges of being away from home or dealing with cultural differences.
Mr. Rakesh Kumar and Mr. Rakesh Ahuja asserted that how one being aware of their legal rights can come out of the fraud. They stated that women are not stepping stones of their family moving abroad. They commended the initiative taken by CPJ College in collaboration with GGSIPU and NCW for organizing such an important event and encouraged continuous dialogue and education to address the complexities in NRI marriages. Mr. Rohtash Singh Saroha highlighted the importance matching the compatibility of the bride and groom before commencement of marriage. He suggested that if the couple has deeper understanding of each other's values and beliefs they will lead a happy married life.
Mr. R.S. Goswami stressed the importance of being vigilant and well-informed. He urged the audience to be aware of the legal procedures and rights involved, thus ensuring protection and justice for all parties. Mr. Goswami impressed with the well worded address of Dr. Chaturvedi appreciated that with the kind of qualities and caliber Dr. Chaturvedi possesses, certainly with the commitment of imparting quality education, CPJ has become one of the leading institutes in Delhi.
Dr. Shivani Goswami thanked NCW and said that the theme of the Awareness Program is very good and relevant for female students. She suggested that parents should also take responsibility of complete enquiry of the background of the NRI whether he would be suitable or not. If boy has good habits, hardworking and well behaved then love between spouses emerge automatically. Ms. Firdos Khan said that a total of 1,617 complaints have been received from NRI women who have allegedly been abandoned by their spouses abroad in the last five years. She further added that the government has taken a number of steps to address the issue of abandonment, domestic violence, harassment and other matrimonial disputes faced by married NRI women living abroad. Ms. Saraswati Solanki emphasized the need for streamlined legal procedures for NRI marriages, especially in cases of divorce, inheritance and child custody. Dr. Shalini Tyagi appreciated NCW's efforts and said that spreading awareness around these issues are essential for the protection of women in NRI marriages, ensuring that they understand their rights and the resources available to them. At the end, the program concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Ms. Ishmeet Kaur Sodhi, Law Faculty with gratitude to the distinguished guests, dignitaries, organizing team of NCW, GGSIPU and CPJ College and all students who contributed to the spectacular success of this program.
