"India Takes Strong Stance on Global Governance and Terrorism at BRICS Summit"

The 17th BRICS Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6-7, 2025, witnessed significant contributions from India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit focused on crucial issues such as global governance, peace and security, multilateralism, development, and artificial intelligence.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for reform in global institutions to reflect contemporary realities. He stressed that the United Nations Security Council, IMF, World Bank, and WTO require immediate reform to ensure a multipolar and inclusive world order. The Prime Minister also highlighted the urgent need for United Nations Security Council reform, and he thanked the leaders for adopting strong language on this issue in the summit declaration.

On peace and security, Modi strongly condemned terrorism, citing the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which he described as an attack on humanity. He called for collective action against terrorism, emphasizing that those who finance, promote, or harbor terrorists must be dealt with in the strongest possible manner. The Prime Minister appreciated the BRICS leaders for condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack in strong terms.

In the session on strengthening multilateralism, economic-financial issues, and artificial intelligence, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of diversity and multipolarity in the BRICS grouping. He emphasized that BRICS can play a crucial role in shaping a multipolar world, especially during times of uncertainty and challenges. Modi proposed four key suggestions for the BRICS grouping:

1. The BRICS New Development Bank should follow a demand-driven approach and prioritize long-term sustainability in project approvals.

2. The group should consider establishing a science and research repository that benefits countries in the Global South.

3. BRICS should focus on securing and making resilient the supply chains of critical minerals.

4. The grouping should work towards responsible AI governance, promoting innovation while addressing concerns related to AI governance.

Dr. Nayan Prakash Gandhi, Renowned Management Analyst & Social Thinker, India, commented, "The BRICS summit is a significant step towards a more equitable and multipolar world order. India's participation in the summit demonstrates its commitment to multilateralism and its role in shaping a more just and equitable world order."

The 17th BRICS Summit concluded with the adoption of the 'Rio de Janeiro Declaration' by the member countries. India's participation in the summit, led by Prime Minister Modi, underscored the country's commitment to global governance reform, peace and security, and multilateralism. As the world grapples with complex challenges, India's voice and contributions to the BRICS grouping are crucial in shaping a more equitable and multipolar world order.
